Prayers and Wishes for Good Health to John Derbyshire
I looked for a reference to the subjects we cover here at ENV and thought I would go away disappointed.
Derbyshire: “Mommy, You’re Stupid! You’re Stupid, Mommy!”
John Derbyshire at National Review was AWOL for a while but I’m glad to see he’s back in action, abusing us in his accustomed style. He is one of those Darwinists like PZ Myers who’s always at least an enjoyable read notwithstanding that part of the enjoyment lies in the way the actual content tends to boil down to something little above the level of “Mommy, you’re stupid! You’re stupid, Mommy!” (This is our three-year-old Saul’s current best shot at a counterargument when crossed.) Thus it’s a relief to find that on his vacation from Darwin advocacy, John has learned nothing. On James Lee, briefly famous gunman and hostage-taker at the Discovery Channel headquarters, Derbyshire chides those who took a Read More ›
John Derbyshire on “Expelled,” or How to Review a Movie without Really Trying
[Note: For a more comprehensive defense of Ben Stein’s documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, please see: NCSE Exposed at NCSEExposed.org] I have always admired G. K. Chesterton’s dictum that if something is worth doing, it is worth doing badly, but I never appreciated the full scope of its application until reading John Derbyshire’s recent review of Ben Stein’s “Expelled” at National Review Online. “What on earth has happened to Ben Stein?” asks Derbyshire. “He and I go a long way back.” Are the two close? Are they old pals who have been through a lot together? “No,” he says, “I’ve never met the guy.” But wait. How can this be? How can Derbyshire have forged this bond of friendship with Read More ›
David Berlinski vs. John Derbyshire: Round Two
David Berlinski is back at NRO with a take down of the odious and tiresome John Derbyshire. Derbyshire has sunk to new lows recently in his attacks on Discovery Institute, Expelled, and anyone who has the temerity to advocate intelligent design or simply question Darwinism. Berlinski is in no mood to pull his punches in going after Derbyshire. Having not seen the documentary that he proposes to criticize, Derbyshire is nonetheless quite certain that he knows what it conveys. “It is pretty plain,” he asserts, “that it is a piece of creationist porn.” Perhaps I will be forgiven for suggesting that John Derbyshire’s late-night scrutiny of the Internet may have corrupted his habitual search for le mot juste. Expelled has Read More ›
Dembski Responds to Derbyshire
Bill Dembski has posted an excellent riposte to John Derbyshire’s recent comments at the AEI conference on Darwinism and conservatism in which George Gilder and I participated. Eventually I plan to write my own reflections about some of Derbyshire’s comments, but in the meantime Dembski hits the nail on the head.
